Electrical Lineworker Program

Lineman Training Program Overview

Electrical linemen are vital to keeping the power grid running. They install, maintain, and repair power lines so electricity is delivered safely and reliably to homes, businesses, and industries. Without linemen, communities wouldn’t have the consistent power needed for daily life, work, and progress.

At APEX Elite Line Academy, students learn to safely construct and maintain modern power systems and electrical grids. Training combines hands-on instruction with essential classroom learning, giving students the confidence and technical knowledge to succeed in a high-demand career. This is the right program for those who enjoy hands-on work, problem solving, teamwork, and the outdoors—and who are ready for a physically demanding yet rewarding career.

Lineworkers (also called linemen or powerline technicians) often work outdoors, at heights, and in challenging weather conditions, but their work directly impacts every community they serve. At APEX, students will gain the skills, mindset, and safety-first approach needed to thrive in this environment.

Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Information

A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is an essential qualification for today’s line workers. In the field, lineworkers are often required to operate bucket trucks, digger derricks, and other heavy equipment to safely build and maintain power lines. Having a CDL not only expands your employability but also makes you more versatile and valuable to contractors, utilities, and other employers in the industry.

Most employers require a Class A – Unrestricted CDL with the following endorsements:

  • Air Brakes – to safely operate trucks and utility vehicles with air brake systems.
  • Combination Vehicles – to tow trailers and operate vehicles used in construction and line work.

With this level of CDL training, graduates are fully prepared to handle the demands of line work transportation and equipment operation.

How to Obtain Your CDL

APEX students have two pathways to earn their CDL as part of their preparation for the electrical utility, telecommunications, and renewable energy industries:

Option 1: Train at BTI – On-Site CDL Program

Baker Technical Institute (BTI) offers a Truck Driving Training Program right here at the APEX campus. Students can complete the program in as little as two weeks, gaining hands-on training with professional instructors and immediate access to the vehicles and equipment they’ll use in the industry. This streamlined pathway makes it convenient and efficient for APEX students to graduate fully prepared for the workforce.

Option 2: Attend a Federal Motor Carrier Approved Training Provider

Students may also choose to obtain their CDL through another FMCSA-approved training provider. This option provides flexibility for students who may prefer to complete CDL training closer to home or through an established program in their area.

Why It Matters

Employers consistently seek lineworkers who are job-ready from day one—and a CDL is a major part of that readiness. By earning your CDL before graduation, you’ll:

  • Increase your employment opportunities nationwide
  • Be fully qualified to operate industry equipment safely

Gain a competitive edge in the hiring process
